I have gotten familiar with both CNC mills and lathes, and have machined a model car jack and a steel-head hammer.
After many hours in the shop, my final completed hammer!
The hammer had many interacting parts with tight tolerances (as well as one tight-tolerance press fit). I also got exposure to the heat treatment process: the hard side of the hammer is heat treated steel, and then finished with sand blasting.
Another machining project I worked on: a model car jack which moves up and down as you rotate the handle.
Here I am turning the threaded rod for the model car jack. For this case, I used the lathe MDI to complete the operation.
For the mill, I used Fusion360 CAM to generate the tool paths, but I also have experience with hand-operating it for simpler operations.
