In my free time, I enjoy spending time in the woodshop and hand crafting wooden bowls, boards, boxes, etc. It is very satisfying to see ideas come together using only my own hands. Above is a cross-grain cutting board I made out of maple and purpleheart wood.
In Process of building a wooden box; this the just before the glue up.
This is a mahogany and walnut wooden box. It has a sliding top with a perfectly matching top lid handle. I split the oak down the middle so the grain pattern is continuous and wraps around the box. I made four identical boxes, one for each member of my family, upon my graduation.
Though I am most frequently using the table saw, planer, and router, the wood lathe is something altogether different for me. It is a mesmerizing and tricky process and the one with which I feel closest to the material, like I can touch each grain in the block of wood.
Measure twice, cut once. Before beginning a project I have a clear plan of the procedures and how each step fit together, and which cuts have the most impact on the quality of the final product.
